Well I had a blast yesterday evening, nice people and good food. But it is the question of wine that I intend to address here. Turns out that the Amarone Tomassi is a quite excellent wine, something I don’t know if I’ve ever said about a wine before. I was also offered a glass or two of Amarone Classico which is in the same price range and also was very good. Does this mean that there really is a difference depending on price even for a wine pleb like myself? Perhaps, or maybe it is just Amarone who make delicious wines. I will have to try another brand as well to collect some more data.
I’m still a beer person though, halfway through the evening I was offered a beer and it was oh so good. For the price of one bottle of Amarone you can get at least 10 bottles of really good beer. Still there are times when wine is more suitable and right now it looks like it might be worth spending a few more kronor to get the better stuff.
I’m also surprisingly spry today, I’ve heard the argument made that “better” alcoholic beverages do not cause as much hangover as the cheap stuff. But I also drank quite a lot of water before going to bed and had a chilly forty minute(?) walk home across town (while loudly singing “My Way” using only the phrase “Regrets I’ve had a few but then again to few to mention” with two of the people from the party going my way).

Did my shopping for new year’s eve today. J.P. Chenet is the only wine I can ever remember having tasted before, probably due to the odd design of the bottle. Its cheap, but I think it tastes good (I am by no means a regular drinker of wine, a beer on the other hand…). Today I decided to buy a really expensive wine (well compared to J.P.Chenet at least) as well to see if there’s any difference. I bought Amarone Tommasi which is about five times the price of J.P.Chenet. I suppose this test is really pretty flawed since I’m guessing you should match wines to what you will be eating etc. etc., but it might be a fun experiment none the less.
I ended up doing the same with champagne, buying the somewhat more expensive Pol Roger as well as the cheaper Rene Barbier (sparkling wine if one wants to be picky).
Attempting to satisfy my curiosity seems like a good way to end the old year and start the new.
